Welcome to day 3 of the Back to School Blog Tour. All of the giveaways for the tour are listed on the Back to School Blog Tour page. There are still several days left to enter all giveaways. Entering is easy. From liking authors on Facebook to commenting on their blog, you can enter to win fabulous books from featured authors, a $25 Amazon Gift card, and children’s ebooks.

Today’s Featured Author is Sean McCartney.

Sean Paul McCartney (He’s not related to the Beatle) was born in 1971. He graduated from Alfred University in upstate New York with a Bachelor’s in Communications in 1993. From there he played two exciting seasons traveling around the world with the Washington Generals playing against the famous Harlem Globetrotters. In 1996 Sean earned his Masters in Education and embarked on a career as a teacher.

He is employed by Plain Local Schools in Canton, OH. The first book of The Treasure Hunters Club series is called Secrets of the Magical Medallions and introduces four ambitious teens Tommy Reed, Jackson Miller, Shannon McDougal and Chris Henderson. The series is a cross between the mystery of the Hardy Boys with the action, adventure and history of Indiana Jones and National Treasure.

I was excited to find out about this new and upcoming children’s author. He shares his school memories, inspirations, and reveals his new upcoming projects.

Sean McCartney is the author of the Treasures Hunters Club series on Amazon.

  • Who was your favorite author, and how did they influence your writing?

Sean: There are so many writers that I have read about who helped me throughout my writing life. I looked to John Grisham for style and outlining. Tom Clancy gave me the best way to start a story with the “what if?” question. Rick Riordan was an influence because he was once a teacher and has done the same thing that I have done, albeit with much greater success. J Finally, JA Konrath and his Newbie Writers Blog provided a ton of information about going the independent route that has proved invaluable to me.

  • What is your most remembered Back to School memory?

Sean: When I walked into my eighth grade World War II class and tiny Ms. Schot was standing there. She wore a blue knit sweater over a white, long sleeved shirt and a floor length dress. Her glasses were always on the tip of her nose and she wore the same clothes everyday whether it was hot or cold. She taught me WWII but more importantly she taught me how to write to the point. She would always preach, “Say it and say it well and then get out!” I always remember that from all these years ago.

  • Did you have any subjects that were difficult for you in school?

Sean: Chemistry sent me over the edge! J No matter how much I studied or how much time I put in I just never got it. My teacher was a really nice man who helped me after school and during study hall. He made me promise not to go into the sciences in college. I didn’t!

  • Do you have a writing routine?

Sean: My routine is to outline the entire book before I start so I have a guide as to where I am going. I have a spiral notebook for every book. If I do some research or something I had to write down on a napkin about a certain chapter or scene…it goes into the notebook. When the novel is finished my notebook looks like a room from Hoarders. I usually show them to students at schools I visit. I usually write from 10 to midnight. Things are quiet at the house and I feel very creative at night.

  • How would you summarize how writing is for you in one sentence?

Sean: Writing allows me to have a creative outlet.

  • What other projects are you working on right now?

Sean: Two main things: the fourth book in The Treasure Hunters Club series and a Common Core teacher’s book for The Search for Excalibur.

2015 Back to School Blog Tour: DAY TWO

Welcome to day 2 of the Back to School Blog Tour. If you haven’t tried to sign up for the 4 giveaways going on, they are listed at the Back to School Blog Tour Page. There are still several days left. Entering is easy. From liking authors on Facebook to commenting on their blog, you can enter to win fabulous children’s books, children’s ebooks, and Amazon Gift cards.

Today’s featured author is Rachel Elizabeth Cole.

Rachel Elizabeth Cole writes a mix of genres–from heartfelt literary and women’s fiction, to laugh-out-loud chick-lit, to quirky contemporary middle grade fiction. Her short stories have appeared in literary magazines both online and in print, including Cahoots, Literary Mama, and Flashquake.

When she’s not writing, Rachel works as a graphic designer specializing in book covers. Her favourite season is autumn, she prefers tea to coffee, and she wishes every morning began at ten a.m.

Even though she hates the rain, Rachel lives just outside Vancouver, British Columbia, with her husband, their two sons, and two very spoiled house rabbits.

I got to ask Rachel about her school memories, writing inspirations, and upcoming Rabbit series books. I absolutely love them! It might be the teacher in me that I’m a sucker for a cute bunny eating homework, but it’s a great title, book, and she’s an amazing writer. I hope you enjoy her interview.

Rachel Elizabeth Cole is the author of soon to be released "The Rabbit Ate My Flipflops".

1) Who was your favorite author, and how did they influence your writing?

Rachel: When I was a kid, my favourite author was Gordon Korman. He’s a fellow Canadian who wrote his first book when he was twelve and in Grade Seven. It was published when he was fourteen. That really inspired me to think that if he could write and publish a book, then so could I!

2) What is your most remembered Back to School memory?

Rachel: I don’t have a particular Back to School memory, but I always enjoyed school and learning, so I looked forward to going back every fall. I liked how the classrooms were so clean, the chalkboard washed and shining, the desks empty and waiting for students to put them to use, new books, new pencils, new shoes, new clothes. And, of course, the opportunity for new friends and new learning experiences.

3) Did you have any subjects that were difficult for you in school?

Rachel: Math. I still struggle with simple arithmetic like multiplication and subtraction—and forget long division! I found it discouraging that all the other kids seemed to get the concepts down so quickly, while I struggled and struggled. Thank goodness for calculators!

4) What helps motivate you to write a story?

Rachel: The best motivation for me is knowing I’ve got readers eager and waiting to read my books! I write to connect, to teach, to share, to move, to entertain. The best feeling in the world is when readers—especially the reluctant ones—tell me they’ve read my book and loved it so much they’re eager to read more!

5) How would you summarize how writing is for you in one sentence?

Rachel: For me, writing is like breathing.

6) What other projects or books are you working on right now?

Rachel: I’m about to start work on The Rabbit Ate My Hall Pass, the third book in The Rabbit Ate My . . . Series.

2015 Back to School Blog Tour: DAY ONE

Welcome to the first day of the 2015 Back to School Blog Tour. It’s part of my giving back to the Indie Children’s Author community. I am featuring some unique and fabulous books this week from picture books to YA. With the new Common Core being adopted in many schools throughout the US, this is a great time to learn about new authors and possible new books for guided reading and novel studies.

Plus, if you just want to find a great new book to read at the start of school, please check back each day for our new featured author. At the end of the tour, I’ll reveal where you can find an exclusive PDF ebook of writing lesson plans for Common Core written by myself. It’s the start of a series of writing curriculum for the Common Core that I will be writing up over my year of writing. Yes. Teachers still do teaching activities on their sabbaticals. So sit back and relax. You’re in for some excellent children’s literature experiences this week.

This year, our giveaways will work differently then before. Some of the authors will be sponsoring their own giveaways on their websites, and I’ll have a Grand Prize giveaway available on my blog. The Grand Prize for the Back to School Blog Tour Giveaway will be a $25 Amazon Gift Certificate. You can also win a set of my Crystal Keeper Chronicles or an ebook copy of my fabulous writing lessons ebook.

**Note: Giveaway deadlines are set under the guidance of the authors instructions. The Back to School Blog Tour Giveaway will end at midnight Mon. Sept. 14, 2015. Winners will receive notification in 48 hours, and will be announced on this blog.

In addition, Marilyn has served as Editor of a number of anthologies. Her short stories have been published in seven anthologies and on the literary blog, Glass Cases.

Marilyn Peake is the author of the children's middle grade trilogy "The Fisherman's Son". All three books are available on Amazon.

AWARDS: Silver Award, two Honorable Mentions and eight Finalist placements in the ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Awards, two Winner and two Finalist placements in the EPPIE Awards, Winner of the Dream Realm Awards, and a Finalist placement in the 2015 National Indie Excellence Book Awards.

I am so excited to have her be our first author to kick off our blog tour this week. I got to ask her several questions to learn a little about her school memories, past influences, and role models.

1) Who was your favorite author, and how did they influence your writing?

Marilyn: I’ve had a lot of favorite authors over the years. In children’s books, I’d say J. K. Rowling, Lemony Snicket and, from my own childhood, the authors of the Nancy Drew books are among my favorites. Each of those authors influenced my own writing by demonstrating how the creation of imaginary worlds allows a young reader to step inside the pages and explore. In my own trilogy of children’s middle grade chapter books—The Fisherman’s Son, The City of the Golden Sun, and Return of the Golden Age—I spent a lot of time developing the details of the imaginary worlds within which I set the stories.

2) What is your most remembered Back to School memory?

Marilyn: I have many precious memories of my children’s Back to School days when they were growing up. Some of my fondest memories are when they returned to school with projects they had completed based on one of their favorite books. For his kindergarten year, my youngest son created a basketful of stuffed animals based on the characters in the wonderful book, Stellaluna. He stuffed socks and felt cutouts with filling and then decorated them with feathers and buttons to resemble baby birds and a bat. That was a really adorable project and one of my fondest Back to School memories.

3) Did you have any subjects that were difficult for you in school? How did you overcome your difficulties in school?

Marilyn: By the time I went to college, I found advanced math difficult. I remedied that by reviewing Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry and taking a Calculus course. By the time I went to graduate school, my favorite sections of Probability and Statistics were the ones that included Calculus.

4) What helps you motivate to write a story?

Marilyn: I write books set in worlds that fascinate me. That keeps me motivated to explore that world and tell the story I’m developing within it.

5) How would you summarize how writing is for you in one sentence?

Marilyn: Writing is sometimes euphoric and sometimes just painfully hard work.

6) What other projects or books are you working on right now?

Marilyn: Right now, I’m writing an adult zombie apocalypse series. The first book in the series, Mutation Z: The Ebola Zombies, is free. The second book, Mutation Z: Closing the Borders, will be published on September 8th.

Marilyn Peake has set up a giveaway especially for this blog tour. You can win a set of her trilogy of THE FISHERMAN’S SON, her middle grade chapter book series.

My Year of Writing: Starts with Back to School Blog Tour Planning

Tiffany Turner starting her year of writing. Let’s see what can become of it. 😉

Well, it’s been a while since I’ve posted. It’s mostly because I’m trying to get back into a routine after going through a summer of physical therapy. There has been good news. I’m out of the critical range. My heart has finally started to pump stronger. I’m not out of the woods yet. It still isn’t normal, and my doctor has me on a regiment of heart medicines and I’m doing regular physical cardiotherapy. Otherwords, taking care of myself is a job onto itself now.

I’ve also taken off the next year from teaching to work on my health and spend a year writing. I’m going to live the dream of being a full time writer and try to get my health back in order as much as possible. My first week of writing has been filled with participating in a live Writer’s Digest webinar on Middle Grade novels with an agent, writing romance and more of The Lost Secret of Time, and planning the 2015 Back to School Blog Tour.

It feels good living the writer’s life. It is a dream that I’m finally able to live, thankfully. I’m glad that God gave me this second chance, and I’m going to try to make the best of it. I want you to join along in this new adventure. Plus, join me in the Back to School Blog Tour Sept. 7-11. I’m still taking sign-ups for participating authors. Email me at: tiff (at) tiffmeister(.)net. I’d love to hear from you. I’ve got space up to 10 participating authors. Hope you can join me.

Most of all, here’s a salute to all those teachers out there starting the 2015-2016 School Year. I can’t be in the trenches with you, but at least, I can help support you all. I’ll be writing down a lot of my lessons I’ve developed over my 18 years of teaching, and will be posting them to TeachersPayTeachers.com. Plus, I’ve developed a unit to teach my novel THE LOST SECRET OF FAIRIES over the last two years in my classroom. I’ll be posting information on that when it becomes available. I know with Common Core it will be important to have curriculum to teach novel studies. I’ve done that in my classroom annually for 18 years. I’m happy to share my knowledge in future posts and with lesson plans on TeachersPayTeachers. Until then, take care, and have a great start to the school year.

HAPPY BACK TO SCHOOL!-Tiffany Turner (Mrs. Turner)

Update: The Lost Secret of Time is Coming!

Standard
Tiffany Turner in the hospital ICU Dec. 2014

Tiffany Turner in the hospital ICU Dec. 2014

Greetings Crystal Keeper Fans! I’ve been rejuvenating my efforts to get back into the swing of writing. As always, life has thrown some curves at me. And they were some pretty big curves. There were a lot of changes in education, namely the Common Core, that has made it difficult for me to keep up with all my writing and still give all my efforts in teaching. Transitions are really hard in education, and this has been the worst and most difficult that I’ve seen in my career.

Then, I got blindsided by illness in December 2014. I got pneumonia and ended up in the hospital. While there, I went into Code Blue and cardiac arrest. Basically, I almost died, and the doctors were trying everything to help me pull through. I also had the complication of septic shock and the discovery of a heart blood clot. So, it was discovered that I have cardiomyopathy, a heart failure condition where my heart isn’t pumping enough blood to the rest of my body.

My monitors in the hospital.

My monitors in the hospital.

This has made it difficult for me to do much else but get better. I’ve been on medical leave from teaching, and I’m taking a year of absence to get my health back. The bonus of all the health issues is that as I start to feel better, I can start writing again.

So, over the next year, I’ll be working on The LOST SECRET OF TIME and finishing the Crystal Keeper Chronicles. I’ve always intended on doing so. But sometimes life just throws you a curve ball, and you have to adapt, pick yourself up, brush yourself off, and keep going.

Resting in my hospital bed Dec. 2014.

Resting in my hospital bed Dec. 2014.

All the encouragement is always helpful and appreciated. I’ve got a start on THE LOST SECRET OF TIME, and signed up for Camp NANO in April to make progress on the book. Things are underway, and I’ll be sure to give you updates as I move through the process. As for now, I’ll be continuing with featuring more Indie Authors once a month, and will try to get back into doing Indie writing posts to help out other authors.

So, hug your parents, kids, and pets. Positive thoughts can do so much. You just never know what path will lay before you. And with writing, everyone is on a different writing journey. I’m glad to be sharing mine with you.

Take care!-Tiffany Turner (Mrs. Turner)

Update: April 20, 2019

Since I wrote this post, I have spent a few years getting back my strength, getting into a writing routine, and returning to teaching with limited hours. I’m currently working for a private education tutoring company and going back into schools teaching after school workshops in Science, Math and Reading. Life it is a bit different now, but I am proud to announce I finished and published the last book in the Crystal Keeper’s Chronicles, The Lost Secret of Time. I’ve also been speaking on different Self-Publishing panels at local cons, working diligently on my romance pen name, Marilyn Vix, and continue to keep healing as I feel I’ve been given this second chance.

It just shows that no matter what happens, don’t give up. You can’t just throw in the towel, but think hey, what can I do with what I have now? Focusing on my writing and the support of my family and friends have made it possible to keep going, and of course, keep writing. If I’ve learned anything from all this, it’s to not let what life throws at you stop you. Keep moving towards your goals, and you can do anything.

Author Spotlight Book Review: E.S. Pete Sixth Grade Sense

Standard
E.S. Pete is available at Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

E.S. Pete is available at Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

This month’s author spotlight review is on E.S. Pete Sixth Grade Sense by Arnold Rudnick. I always like a good story with a psychic twist. Pete, like other boys, wants to be normal. But has a strange twist to life; he can read minds. Most of us would love to have this super power. For Pete, sometimes it’s a curse. Like being able to read the mind of a teacher that is going to rob the school and no one believes him. Sometimes he wishes he couldn’t do what he could. Factor in his crush on his friend Casey, and you got a recipe for a mystery adventure.

This middle grade novel is a cross between Encyclopedia Brown and the Mentalist, except with a school boy crush in the middle. Unlike Encyclopedia, Pete has fallen for his sidekick or at least she becomes his sidekick in the first of what proves to be an interesting series. From trying to save the day to going on a field trip as bait for the robbery, Pete is the unsung hero. He has to believe that he is right even with the ability to read people’s minds. He still has doubts on whether he should use the information or not. It often gets him in trouble.

I liked this twist of fate. What would happen if you could read minds? Rudnick digs deep into this dilemma giving Pete that morality of good vs. evil that is often missing from today’s literature for children. With the basics of a good ole’ fashion mystery, ESPete: Sixth Grade Sense will charm any child reader into believing that reading minds isn’t easy, and having super powers means you have to still be like everyone else. I think they’ll relate to Pete on an everyday level and enjoy the idea that reading minds wouldn’t be easy. I recommend for children that enjoy a good mystery series that might enjoy fantasy or paranormal twists.
